Picked up by chance after it caught my eye in a bookstore. Notify me of new comments via email. Now I saw this shortly after it came out in the summer, I was searching for some Bernhard books and this from a writer I have featured twice before on the blog appeared. Lee allowed me the opportunity to read this work before he found a publisher for it. This was like spending the afternoon engrossed in a gritty hilarious stand up comedy.

It’s a great success in doing this, and I’m so happy it’s finally available in English. I read this during the course of a day when, well, yep. Ever walk into a house without books? I guess in San Salvador shit begets shit.

An interesting contrast is that in Bernhard’s novels, one rarely even wanders near sexuality, neither positive nor negative depictions, while Moya’s narrator’s exploration of revulsion certainly goes there nigh onto wallows.


This is the third time I’ve read a novel claiming Bernhard lineage, and it’s probably the least successful of all. Thomas Bernhard in San Salvadora book-length diatribe against Bernuard Salvador, I’m tempted to write a similar novel about the United States, a morally bankrupt nation, to say the least. All of us, at times, might have a moment for expressing our rants. It may be the most brilliantly carried off aeco of all time, precisely because of how direct and open Moya is about his source.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. The book is also indeed a bitter critique of El Salvador, where the author Castellanos Moya is from, and its culture.

But this review is supposed to be about this novel, which is a good one. When he turned twenty years old he decided to move to Montreal, Canada; where he has been living, for the past eighteen years. When I first read that Moya received death threats, I thought it seemed kind of silly based on the wan content — not something to take so seriously, surely?

Published first published In the end, what is important to me is what the rant is dealing with, from which the complaint derives it substance from, and if the rant can sustain itself and keep me interested. This little book is great.

This is a classic pub scene in a way with two men talking about the world one returning has seen the world and wants to tell his friend about how bad this place was. Vega is foremost paranoid.

Perhaps the greatest difference between the writers mentioned above and the writer Moya is that in this particular story there wasn’t anything mentioned of worth beholden to his country. It isn’t something I am accustomed my own country, in general, caring two hoots about. I actually quite liked it.

Bernhard did too, I’d argue, but within a smaller range. Novelists should as much as possible avoid reading Thomas Bernhard.
